Large Contour Drawing

Image
Fine line permanent marker on 20 x 26 Mayfair paper  *Mayfair paper chosen due to choice of drawing material (permanent marker) so I wasn’t concerned about any smudging on the paper.  A collection of “beauty” products and associated items. First I began by taping down the paper onto my desk, which luckily was just big enough for it. Then I began drawing what I considered to be a good base/symmetry item, my makeup mirror. I used a ruler to measure out the paper to place it in the exact middle and began drawing. Then I started to draw in the other items that I had picked out to be in the piece. I didn’t have a plan for the order or placement, I just drew them in as I went along where they felt right and looked like the fit the best. This took some time erasing and replacing but eventually I had drawn all the items out in the places and sizes I was happy with. After finishing all the drawings I began outlining which was soooo stressful at first. I actually avoided the ...

Material Exploration

Image
Done on 8.5 x 11 Sketchbook page   This was created using many different materials, some of which were bought for this class and some of which I own otherwise. A sample of the materials used include glitter pens, charcoal, pencil crayons of different brands, pastels, and many more! I didn’t have an exact process in mind for creating the material exploration page other then to play with and showcase the materials in whichever way I thought worked best for the individual items - some testing was done a *little* more technically then others.

Contemporary Artist #2

ARTIST: Dóra Maurer  BLOG SOURCE:  https://www.tate.org.uk/  ARTIST SITE SOURCE:  https://doramaurer.com/maurer-dora/works THOUGHTS: This artists artwork challenges my idea of what a drawing can because of how technical it is, ironically opposite to the first artist I discussed. All 3 of these drawings in different ways are a series of straight lines that give a very controlled and purposeful feel but maybe almost in a way some people, which has sometime been myself, could see as too much until it is no longer a “drawing”. This is because of the thin line that is sometimes set between creativity and technicality, artists like this that lean heavy on the technicality side can provoke thoughts of “oh well I could do that easily”. This same kind of thought is also provoked on the opposite side of the spectrum, by art that is seen possibly too creative and messy, in which I’ve seen comments like “a kindergartener could do that”. However I have eventually learned to...

Contemporary Artist #1

ARTIST: Guillaume Adjutor Provost  BLOG SOURCE:  https://espaceartactuel.com/en/  ARTIST SITE SOURCE:  https://www.guillaumeadjutorprovost.com/ THOUGHTS: This artists artwork challenges my ideas of what a drawing can be because of the experimental feel of it. Which is not to say at all that it is “bad” art as I don’t think any art is bad, it just has a very raw feel to it (save for the middle piece) like something that is created from just playing around with materials without a specific intention in mind. This challenges the notion that art is always something done with intention and purpose rather then just existing as a visual on paper, which is always something I have struggled with as an artist. This idea of purpose and knowing what your going to do beforehand can cause, at least for me, lots of artist block as I can’t find myself to put anything on the page at all because I can’t think of a purpose or inspiration. Whereas this artist seems like he may not...

Butterfly Drawing

Image
8.5 x 11 Sketchbook page - Pen and marker For this drawing I was attempting to move past some artist block, and draw what ever my mind decided should go on the page. The butterfly I had a lot of fun with because there’s so may little lines and details you can add to make it unique, and for the leaves I was honestly just doodling and decided to fill in some of the inner details black to make a bolder background. As for the colour of the butterfly I wanted to keep it very low-key as I often see them done with really bright bold colours which is of course beautiful but I thought I’d keep the colours very neutral and pale cool tones to put the focus of beauty on the designs and patterns of the butterfly itself, including the body rather then purely the wings.
