THOUGHTS: This artists artwork challenges my ideas of what a drawing can be because of the experimental feel of it. Which is not to say at all that it is “bad” art as I don’t think any art is bad, it just has a very raw feel to it (save for the middle piece) like something that is created from just playing around with materials without a specific intention in mind. This challenges the notion that art is always something done with intention and purpose rather then just existing as a visual on paper, which is always something I have struggled with as an artist. This idea of purpose and knowing what your going to do beforehand can cause, at least for me, lots of artist block as I can’t find myself to put anything on the page at all because I can’t think of a purpose or inspiration. Whereas this artist seems like he may not have even had a plan in mind, he was just drawing and brushing onto the maybe whatever he felt, and I find that inspirational within itself. As for his middle piece done in graphite, it seems to have a bit more intention and preciseness to it, yet it still plays with the idea of purpose, as I look at the drawing and for the life of me cannot tell at all what it is supposed to be. It is clearly technically done well it’s practiced shading and elaborate lines but at least to the viewer it doesn’t have to have a clear depiction or meaning, it just appears to be shapes. This I love as it forces you to look into it more and more and come up with what is completely your own conclusion, rather then having the bias of a known object.
