THOUGHTS: This artists artwork challenges my idea of what a drawing can because of how technical it is, ironically opposite to the first artist I discussed. All 3 of these drawings in different ways are a series of straight lines that give a very controlled and purposeful feel but maybe almost in a way some people, which has sometime been myself, could see as too much until it is no longer a “drawing”. This is because of the thin line that is sometimes set between creativity and technicality, artists like this that lean heavy on the technicality side can provoke thoughts of “oh well I could do that easily”. This same kind of thought is also provoked on the opposite side of the spectrum, by art that is seen possibly too creative and messy, in which I’ve seen comments like “a kindergartener could do that”. However I have eventually learned to see that this kind of thinking relies too heavy on labelling rather then just accepting the fact that something is visually interesting or pleasing even if you can’t quite figure out why. That is where an artist like the creator of these works, Dóra Maurer, comes in and challenges some of the negative labels I have stuck in my head. I find these pieces, although fairly abstracted, very aesthetically pleasing and interesting uses of colour play, provoking thoughts of whether or not they have deeper meaning then to simply attract the eye. Which challenges the idea of what a drawing is by simply introducing a new idea, maybe art and drawings that constitute art are simply ones that provoke thought, even if the thought is “wow, that’s ridiculous” you still had to think about it and consider it.
